Do Soundproof Curtains Actually Work?

A simple remedy for soundproofing your room and windows is to use soundproof curtains. They don’t cost much and the installation is easy.

Do soundproof curtains work? Yes, these type of curtains help to quiet noise in your room by reducing echo and dampening noise levels.

When I first put these up in my room, I did notice a difference in the overall sound level. This is one of the tips I mentioned in my post about simple ways to soundproof your room. However, they were not that effective in blocking the actual sound entering my room from outside.

so if you want to deaden noise, definitely invest in some curtains. They will prove to be helpful when listening to music, attending online meetings, or tuning into a podcast.

Soundproof curtains help to create an extra barrier between the window and your room. You will be able to hear sounds more crisply because background noise volume is killed quicker than if you were sitting in a barren, tiled hallway.

How To Choose The Perfect Soundproof Curtain

Quite simply, a soundproof curtain is just an extra thick curtain but it’s labeled as a soundproof curtain for marketing purposes.  When you think about it, any dense material will do a good job at drowning out the noise.

Here is what you should look for in a soundproof curtain.  It should be made of heavy, tightly woven material and the length should run from the ceiling down to the floor.   You want your curtain to be long and wide to cover as much surface area as possible around the window so it can reduce noise.

What are the best soundproof Curtains?

The top-rated and best-selling curtains on Amazon are the Nicetown soundproof curtains. These made from a thick microfiber material that reduces noise and also blocks out any sunlight.  These are also known as blackout curtains.  So not only will these curtains not let you hear anything, you also won’t be able to see anything either (comical relief)!

Another popular soundproof curtain is the Best Home Fashion thermal blackout curtains. The material consists of a triple weave fabric to block out sunlight and reduce sound.

Make Your Soundproof Curtains More Effective

Here are a few quick tips to get the most out of your soundproof curtains.  By following these recommendations you will make your curtains more effective at reducing noise in your room.

  • Use 4 panels to increase the amount of density between your room and the window.
  • Use ceiling curtain mounts to block more sound.  Taking your curtain material all the way up to the ceiling will expose more sound-capturing material.
  • Purchase 96” curtains if you have an 8’ ceiling.  You want to make sure your curtains reach the floor.
  • Try combining two pairs of curtains to reduce sound twice as much. This could solve your problem completely!

By themselves, soundproof curtains probably will not block all of the sounds from entering through your window.  However, they will make your room more quiet than before.

Doubling up the curtains should drastically produce better results.  This an affordable solution that would otherwise cost you thousands for a professionally installed soundproof window.
